Lead Designer to Present at UMEA


The Battalion's 2017 Design Coordinator and Front Ensemble Caption Head, Shilo Stroman, is slated to present at the Utah Music Educators Professional Development Conference this Friday, February 3 at 9:45 am in the Garden Room at the Dixie Convention Center in St. George, Utah.

Stroman's session will tackle "The Modern Front Ensemble" and is aimed at band directors and percussion instructors. Topics will include ensemble setups, mallet choices, instructional techniques/exercises and sound design. Attendees will leave with the knowledge and confidence to start a successful modern front ensemble from the ground up.

In addition to his work with The Battalion, Stroman also serves as an adjunct instructor of percussion and jazz at Colorado State University where he teaches Jazz Combo I, Jazz Pedagogy, percussion ensemble, lessons, and oversees the CSU drumline. He is the director of percussion at Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Collins, Colorado and Loveland High School in Loveland, Colorado. He also arranges and consults with many groups across the nation and is involved in the WGI activity as an arranger, adjudicator, and teacher with 2016 WGI Scholastic Concert Open Class Champion Dakota Ridge High School in Denver, Colorado and formerly with the Blue Knights World Percussion Ensemble in Denver, Colorado and Longmont High School in Longmont, Colorado.

Mr. Stroman earned a B.M and a M.M. in Percussion Performance from Colorado State University where he studied with Dr. Eric Hollenbeck. He served as the Colorado Chapter President of the Percussive Arts Society for ten years.

Mr. Stroman has performed with the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra, the Fort Collins Symphony, and the Cheyenne Symphony. He is also an in-demand performer in the Northern Colorado region performing on drumset, vibraphone, and bass guitar in a variety of musical styles. He has performed or appeared with: Art Lande, Don Aliquo, Anders Astrand, Peter Sommer, The Four Tops, Afro-Blue, and Erik Applegate. In January 2006, he commissioned and performed the world premiere of Sticks and Stones variations for drumset and wind ensemble by Jim Bonney. In 2008, he founded Square Peg, a contemporary jazz quartet which performs throughout the Northern Colorado Region. Square Peg's first recording titled "Searching" was released in the fall of 2013 and features Stroman's composing and arranging skills.

As a clinician, Mr. Stroman has presented clinics at the University of Northern Colorado, Colorado State University, Colorado PAS Day of Percussion, Colorado Music Educators Convention, Colorado Bandmasters Convention, Wyoming PAS Day of Percussion, Texas Tech University, and the Montana AA Band Festival. Many high schools and middle schools in Colorado, Texas, and Wyoming have also benefited from Mr. Stroman’s clinics. He has also been an adjudicator for the Kinser Jazz Festival in Casper, Wyoming and the UNC/Greely Jazz Festival in Greely, Colorado.

Mr. Stroman is an educational endorser for the Pro-Mark Drumstick Corporation, Sabian Cymbals, Evans Drumheads, and Yamaha.
